oct_big_brown

We apologize for not keeing our Platte River Fishing Report up to date.  We have been slammed this year! The Grey Reef and the Miracle Mile have been fabulous!  In fact more than just having 50+ fish days on the Grey Reef with many fish from the 17 to 20 inch range nymphing, we have been landing fish over 5lbs for the past 5 consecutive days without hunting them on streamers.  Congrats to John for landing a 24 and 25 inch Brown on his first day with a fly rod in his hand! We have also had great dry fly fishing and streamer fishing.

Tues March 13th
-This is your Updated North Platte River Fishing Report for the Spring Grey Reef Flush 2013. The Bureau of Rec is plans to start its flush at midnight on March 22nd next week.  The flushing flow will continue for 10 days. The flows will increase until they peak at 4000 cfs and will come back down to the normal flow of 500cfs by 10am. The fishing is typically great if you get upstream of the high flow after 10am. The high flows stir up a lot of food for the fish and can cause the fishing to be good. Please keep in mind that it takes a while for the sections downstream of the upper Grey Reef to drop to it’s normal flow.

If the Spring Grey Reef flush 2013/flushing flows for the North Platte River have you concerned in any way feel free to call or email us. Your Platte River Fishing Report for Sunday March 1oth 2013.  Fly Fishing Guide Hooly Henson was out today.  She has been working behind a desk this winter for Neighbors Drilling.  She loves the people she works with and says they are a great company to work for, but her office on the river is refreshing.  What can beat a job on the river doing what you love to do?  She had a lot of fun with her guests today and caught a bunch of trout.  According to Hooly the chocolate pine squirell leech and a size 14 rockworm were the best flies.

Trout fishing in Casper Wyoming Feb 2013

Trout fishing in Casper Wyoming Feb 2013

This is your fishing guides report for Trout fishing in Casper Wyoming.  The in town sections of the North Platte River near Casper Wy still have a lot of floating ice but we are fishing the upper 8 miles of the Grey Reef regularly.  This section is roughly 30 miles south of Casper and flows North through Casper.

Today I had the pleasure of taking my friend Steve Douglas fly fishing.  The fishing was fantastic, and the weather wasn’t bad. (no wind) He quit counting after 10, but estimates catching over 30 Trout.  Another one of our fishing guides Andy Bruste reported counting over 50 Trout also with a single guest.  We are not big fish counters.  The sole purpose for stating numbers on this report is to give you a real idea of how well the Trout fishing in Casper Wyoming is this time of year, because everyone says their fishing is good.

The natural leech and egg patterns worked very well until about noon.   After lunch we had a midge hatch and caught many of our fish on a size 20 midge.

Grey Reef Fly Fishing Report Feb 2013

Grey Reef Fly Fishing Report Feb 2013

Your up to date Grey Reef Fly Fishing Report for Feb 26th 2013 direct from our guides.  Andy Bruste had our friend and return client Steve Douglas out today.  The ramps were pretty iffy with a 10 inch hard crust underneath of the new 4 or 5 inches of snow.  So they wade fished the Grey Reef dam and had good luck.  Caught fish on streamers and nymphs.  We are taking 2 groups together tomorrow and we are going to float the Upper Grey Reef stretch.  We might need to slide the boats down the ramp and possible pull the boats out with a rope to get through the drift.  We have clients that have flown in to catch the monster trout this river is known for this time of year and were going to give her heck.  But we would recommend using caution if you are planning a trip this week.  Although the snow has made it difficult for trips, we are very thankful for the much needed snow!

Miracle Mile Fly Fishing Report for Feb 26th 2013.  Im sure the fly fishing is good but with the huge amount of snow we have gotten over the last few days we would not recommend traveling to the Miracle Mile for at least the next 2 to 3 days.  With the 15 miles of dirt road to get there it will be a mucky mess.  This road does recover very quickly though so we will  try to keep you up to date.  Potentially by Fri or Sat with the help of the Sun this road will be ok for travel.
The Mile might be hard to get to but below is a picture of a nice Brown that was caught with guide Andy Bruste on the Grey Reef today.

North Platte River Wyoming

Here are some facts the Wyoming Game and Fish Department released in the Casper Region Angler Newspaper in 2012 about the North Platte River from Robertson Rd to Glenrock which is 42 miles downstream of Grey Reef Dam.

We conducted a population estimate on the North Platte below Robertson Road in October. The trout population stood at 960 fish per mile with 1,070 pounds of trout per mile. Rainbow trout comprise 94% of the overall trout population with brown trout representing 6%. Rainbow trout average 14 inches in this reach with individuals as large as 6 pounds captured. The brown trout through this reach are slightly larger on average but as with the rest of the North Platte River, the largest trout present by far tend to be brown trout with the occasional brown over 10 pounds caught.

The 2011 population estimate is about average for this reach. Being located 42 miles downstream of Gray Reef Dam, this reach can be impacted by high summer temperatures and silt accumulation making it far less productive than sections closer to Gray Reef. It is interesting to note that trout growth in 2010 and 2011 was exceptional with fish at age 1 and 2 being nearly 2 inches longer than is typical for this reach. High water conditions likely served to keep temperatures and turbidity down while increasing invertebrate production and drift.

Big Muddy Access area to Rabbit Hill Access area is the lowest reach that we routinely monitor trout populations on. In October 2011, we estimated 500 trout per mile and 780 pounds of trout per mile which is meeting our population objective for this reach. Over 98% of the fish are rainbow trout with only about 10 browns per mile. Rainbow trout average 15 inches with individuals to 6 pounds captured.

The section from Edness Kimball WilkinsState Park downstream to the Dave Johnston Powerplant is annually stocked with 20,000 fingerling Firehole rainbows. In 2010 we began a study to evaluate the stocking program to see what percentage of the rainbow population are hatchery fish and whether or not continued stocking is justified.  While the study will run through at least 2014 to fully evaluate, our results from the first year are interesting. We found that 50% of the 12-16 inch rainbows ( 1 year old fish) in this reach were from the 2010 stocking, and that the stocked fish averaged 2 inches longer than their wild counterparts.

Due to Alcova Reservoir spilling in 2010, 2011 and for a short period in 2012, walleye have made their way into the North Platte.  Anglers are reporting catching a few below Gray Reef Dam. There has been some confusion surrounding what to do if you catch a walleye. The restricted creel limits on the river apply only to trout. If you catch a walleye, feel free to keep it (within the walleye limit of course, which is 6 walleye per day or in procession, with no length restrictions).

Miracle Mile Fishing Wyoming- Report Direct from guides day off trip for  Sun Feb 17th 2013.

Andy Bruste and a couple other guides went Miracle Mile fly fishing today.  The fishing wasn’t hot but was fair.  In a half day with 2 guides fishing and 1 guide rowing they landed approximately 20 fish but they were all 2o+ inch Trout.  Most fish were caught nymphing.  Streamer fishing was fairly slow.  Flies working best were pink San Juan’s and egg patterns.

Ya know it’s the days we deem slow that really aren’t to many other people from around the country. These times really make us appreciate the incredible fishery we have, when we are normally are boating 60 plus fish a day.

Gray Reef fishing guides Hooly Henson and Andy Bruste were out today and they said the fishing was very good.  They caught many healthy Rainbows mainly in the 19-21 inch range.  Flies working consistently were natural and brown pine squirrel leech’s, red San Juan worms, black and tan midges.  Andy’s boat picked up a few fish on streamers with one 23 inch Trout.

Grey Reef Fly Fishing

Grey Reef Fly Fishing report direct from our guides for Feb 8th 2013.  The streamer fishing today was pretty slow although we did catch a few 20 in rainbows and lost what may have been a real big fish.  The nymphing of course was excellent.  Pine squirel leeches, red San Won worms, egg patterns, and midge are working exceptionally well.

Mark Schmid grew up in Livingston Montana where he learned to fly fish on the Yellowstone River at the age of 7. He started guiding on the Yellowstone, Madison, Gallatin, and Big Horn river’s before he began his career as a fishing guide in Wyoming. Mark is a 12 year veteran guide here on the North Platte River.  He has been guiding as long as any guide around. He was formerly the Head Guide for Crazy Rainbow Fly Fishing in Casper Wyoming, before moving on.  He has since then been guiding for Wyoming Anglers and we are excited to have him on board!    He is a very patient, professional, and knowledgeable Wyoming fishing guide.

Carl Myers started guiding professionally over 13 years ago and has yet to kick the addiction. The only thing that equals his passion for fly-fishing is his desire to share its’ joys by teaching others about it.  His military-bred work ethic, experience as a school teacher, and years of introducing new anglers to fly-fishing all work together to create a patient but intense guiding style that provides an effective approach for helping clients learn about every aspect of this great sport.  There isn’t a more fun and relaxing place to be than in a drift boat, and there’s no better feeling in the world than an arm sore from wrestling with the North Platte’s legendary rainbows and browns.  So hop in, hold on, and enjoy the ride.  Fish On!

Luke Keil is owner/head guide of Wyoming Anglers guide service.  He considers him self very blessed to be surrounded and working with such a great team of friends and guides.  He has nearly a decade of experience and has an undying love for the sport of fly fishing.   His vision for Wyoming Anglers is to become the most admired and respected fly fishing company in the industry.  Being surrounded by such a great group of people is making this dream a reality!

North Platte River Fly Fishing Guides Report for November 24 on Grey Reef.  Wow was it windy this morning.  I had the pleasure of taking Josh and Jesse Winters for their first time fly fishing.  I’m always nervous taking beginners on a windy day like to day because they can have a bad experience.  Not with these two.  They both had a great attitude and were excited the whole time.  The morning was rough with high winds, although Jesse landed a nice 22 inch Brown Trout.  The afternoon fished much better since we were able to actually get a drift.  What a fun couple to spend a day with!

Natural leeches are still the best nymph pattern we have found to be working right now.

November 23rd.  It was a little chilly today but the fishing was great!  I had the pleasure of taking Mike the pastor of College Heights Baptist Church and Isaiah Rodolph.  What a great bunch of people! Mike did a great job on his first day fly fishing!  And well Isaiah, LOL.  He’s a great fisherman and a pleasure to be around!  We caught a bunch of quality fish today!

North Platte Fishing Guides Report for the Grey Reef for Saturday November 17th.  I had the pleasure of floating our guests from Grey Reef to Lusby.  I had Dave Wilson the owner of the Hideaway Sports Bar and his brother.  After eight miles floating down the river we caught many rainbow trout and had extraordinary weather conditions. The treat today was seeing multiple kinds of wildlife on the North Platte; Trout of coarse, White tail deer, Mule Deer, muskrats and their recently built homes, and a pair of large Golden Eagle’s.
Golden eagles are North America’s largest birds of prey and are the national bird of Mexico. They can dive at racing speeds up to 150 miles an hour. Golden Eagles pair up for several years and sometimes as life partners.  As all the wildlife is getting ready and nested for winter, there us much waterfowl movement along the river.

North Platte River Fishing Report for the Miracle Mile in Wyoming for November 15th 2012.  Hooly and I had the day off the river and decided to go fishing.  Wow what a beautiful day.  Not much wind with temps in the mid to high 40′s.  It couldn’t have been any better!  We fished for 3 or 4 hours and caught many nice Rainbow and Brown Trout.  With several reaching the 21 to 22 inch mark.  There were many more wade fisherman up there today than yesterday.  I met one very nice guy from Fort Collins.  That’s one thing I really enjoy about the fly fishing industry.  I have the pleasure of meeting a lot of quality people!  Being around good people makes being a fly fishing guide a pleasure!  It was so nice to not be in a rush and to just be in the mountain’s taking in the beauty of  nature while catching some wild Trout to boot.  It’s easy to live in the GREAT state of Wyoming and take it for granted.  When I see people driving 3 or 4 hours to fish our waters, it makes me appreciate having multiple Blue Ribbon fisheries right in our back yard. Sometimes it’s important that we slow down, take a deep breath, and appreciate who and what we have.

Wow is the fishing on fire.  The first run we had 5 consecutive double’s.  After 10 or more double’s we quit counting.  We landed a ton of very nice Rainbow Trout with 8 or 9 Brown Trout.  We caught one huge midget Brown.  Many Brown’s are very un proportionate. They can have very big heads, a lot of girth, and not be super long.  Well we caught one Brown that was probably not more than 21 inches and weighed 3+ pounds.   We also caught another Brown Trout that was close to 23 inches.  The fish are fighting very aggressively right now!  The weather was overcast and cool all day but the consistent hookups kept everyone busy and warm. The solitude was amazing!  We only say one other boat up there and only a few wade fisherman.  We floated all the way down to the top of the Pathfinder.  It seems as though many of the Huge Rainbow’s that were in a few run’s just above Pathfinder all summer, have moved back into the reservoir looking for warmer water temps.

Flies that worked well for us: Red San Won’s, Egg Pattern’s. Didn’t much try smaller flies because they were devouring bigger flies.  And as you all know, bigger flies means more fish to the net with fewer chance’s of early releases.

Grey Reef Fishing Report for November 13th. The North Platte River Fishing is very good right now.  We had one boat on the upper Grey Reef section today.  We counted 14 double hook ups where both clients had their rod’s bent over at the same time with fish on them.  What a hoot!  Pretty comfortable temps and great company made for a great day on on the water fishing.  Still a little moss left up there but much of it has let go.  Water clarity doesn’t seem as good as some of the lower stretches on the Gray Reef, but we were consistently catching bigger Rainbows than when we floated Bessemer to Robertson.

Flies we did well on: Natural Pine Squirrel leeches, and egg patterns – Didn’t much try smaller flies because they were devouring bigger flies.  And as you all know, bigger flies means more fish to the net with fewer chance’s of early releases.

The Grey Reef Fly Fishing in the Winter. ($100 off)

After 2 extra months of summer temps it seems, the cold and snow finally arrived.  We were lucky to have the warm temps as long as we did.  Looks like the high temp for Sunday Veterans day will be 28.

Fly fishing is still good at the Grey Reef, Miracle Mile, and Fremont Canyon.  Like always, nymphing is most consistent.  With the winter midge hatches happening we will have some good dry fly fishing.

Looking forward, we are expecting some good fishing temperatures next week.  Starting Tuesday the 13th through the weekend, the temps are supposed to be back in the mid 40′s and into the 50′s. We have some boats going and still have some available at the awesome price of $325 for full days and $275 for half days.

As a Grey Reef fishing guide for nearly 10 years, my opinion is that November through February are some of the BEST months for Grey Reef fishing!  Don’t think that just because old man winter is kicking in, that the fishing has slowed. More big fish over 24 inches are caught this time of year than any other month. And there aren’t any crowds because people let the weather scare them. This is the nicest I have ever seen the weather in October and November.

Take advantage of our Winter Coupon for $100 off Full days and $50 off Half days.

Grab your stocking and get ready to catch some of the biggest fish this river has to offer. We always except last minute bookings and walk-ins, but we know that this time of the year you can only see the weather so far in advance.   If you get that sudden urge to catch a trophy trout with less than a day’s notice, don’t hesitate to call.

Nov 8th-2012-I have to brag on one of our Platte River Fishing Guides from Wyoming Anglers!  As you all know by know, this was Hooly Henson’s 1st year as a fly fishing guide.  Many of you have had the awesome experience of getting to fish with Hooly. I have heard many stories of guys fishing with her and asking at the end of a Stellar day, “how many years have you been guiding?”  Most were shocked to hear that she had only been guiding a year because of the high numbers of trout they caught All Day and the knowledge she had.

I have had the joy of getting to train Hooly.  Many guides when they are not catching fish, take their drift boat and run and hide so they don’t look bad around other guides crushing fish. NOT Hooly. Rather, she stayed right on my tail, asking questions, and studying what I was doing .  She followed me closely from February until November. She has learned more than 40 miles of the North Platte River from Grey Reef Dam all the way to the Water Park in Casper all in 1 season.  From my 10 years of experience I will have to say that she has far excelled any other new guides I have seen on this river in such a short amount of time.  In fact I would venture to say she is at a 3rd or 4th year level.  Goes to show how hard work and dedication pay off!

Hooly Henson was still working for Casper Orthopedics doing physical therapy when she started doing dummy trips in preparation to be a Professional Guide. She guided nearly 2o trips with family and friends in the fall of 2011 and the same in early spring of 2012 before she ever took paying guests.

As the owner of Wyoming Anglers I would like to say that Hooly is one the hardest workers I know.  And that’s coming from a work-a-holic.  When she 1st began working for Wyoming Anglers, there were several weeks when we were short a cook at our lodge.  She didn’t hesitate to step up to the plate, although her’s was already full.  She would leave early to cook at the lodge, go guide a fishing trip, then she would come and prepare dinner for our guests.  What a tuff chick!

Funny Story- 3 years ago on Hooly’s 1st day learning to fly fish, her 2nd fish caught was a 25 inch 6 lb rainbow on a Hopper.  She has been hooked every since.  The fish she caught immediatley after that mammoth Rainbow, was like 17 inches.  In all seriousness she told me that it was just a baby.  Can you see how Platte River Fishing can spoil a guy?

If you haven’t had the opportunity to fish with Hooly, I would suggest you request her and give her a try.  But be prepared, you just might not want to fish with any other guides on the North Platte River.  She has a funny personality and all of our clients love her!  She will not only work her tail off to keep you hooking fish from start to finish, but she will keep you rolling in laughter.

Hooly welcome aboard Wyoming Anglers!  We are so excited to have you!

(Trips Now $100Off) Platte River Fishing Report direct from our guides for November 3rd 2012.  I had the pleasure of getting to fish with Dan and Kathy Mommer today.  What an incredibly nice couple. They have always floated the upper stretch of the Grey Reef so we decided to float a different stretch and see the beauty of the landscapes from Bessemer Bend to Robertson Road.  They did incredibly well.  Not many fish over 16 inches but they were all hard fighters!  Sometimes this time of year on these lower stretches can produce smaller fish. when nymphing.  I got to try out his new 5 wt. Sage One rod.  Wow what a great dry Rod!
